The most significant element affecting the architectural environment in the tropical and subtropical region is solar energy, which influences either its inside or outside the buildings. External louvers can be utilized to block the solar radiation before it reaches the indoor environment, hence, more effective than internal louvers system. On the other hand, external louvers will reduce the daylighting intensity, wind velocity as well as the air change rate inside the buildings. This study discusses the impacts of several different prototypes of external louvers in a classroom in Taipei via the use of ECOTECT/RADIANCE trial version package for daylighting and PHOENICS Computation Fluid Dynamics software for natural ventilation simulations. The combination of these two elements may create a better louver type, even if it is not so easy to create the optimal louvers on both daylighting and ventilation. Finally, summarizes the results of this work and indicates future work required to figure out the best louver geometry and the influences on louvers for indoor air quality.

Early in his career, though the prevailing art movements of the 1920s and ’30s included cubism, surrealism, and the Czech avant-garde, Sudek sought his own approach characterized by a striking mastery of light.

 

Copiously illustrated with photographs from the Art Gallery of Ontario—which will also exhibit the photographs through December 2012—this book takes readers on a journey through Sudek’s life and work. Included here are essays by some of the foremost writers on Sudek’s work, including curator Maia-Mari Sutnik, photo-historian Antonín Dufek, Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes, and photographer Geoffrey James. Sudek’s photographs also feature heavily in Irish novelist John Banville’s Prague Pictures: Portraits of a City, which forms a biographical portrait of the photographer, and several excerpts from the book are included here. Rounding out the volume is a detailed biographical chronology by Czech art historian and Sudek expert Anna Fárová.

 

The photographs in this book cover every stage of Sudek’s extensive career, shedding light on his lifelong quest to perfect his photographic vision.

From the reign of King Magnus Hakonsson (1263-1280) until the Reformation (1537), the province of the Nidaros Church and the realm of the King of Norway coincided, more or less. This was hardly a coincidence. It might have been foreseen already at the construction of the metropolitan see of Nidaros (Trondheim) in 1152 (or 1153). In the early 1260s, when Icelanders and Greenlanders accepted the King of Norway as their lord, they had been under ecclesiastical rule from Trondheim for more than 100 years. There is reason, therefore, to take a look at the role of the Nidaros Church in the making of Norwegian domination in the Norse world and in northern Scandinavia in the Middle Ages. There has been no previous systematic research on the relationship between Church and Crown in the making of a greater Norway in the Middle Ages, therefore this book contributes to opening up this rich field of research, touching upon some central issues.
